Welcome to my web page at Cornell University!
I joined the Computer Systems Laboratory at Cornell after spending eight years (1996-2004) as a faculty member at the University of Rochester where I led the Complexity-Adaptive Processing project. From 1982-1992, I held technical and management positions at IBM Corporation and Prime Computer, Incorporated, working on memory hierarchies and shared memory multiprocessors. I hold a few patents from my work at Prime, including an early patent on split transaction buses supporting cache coherence for shared memory multiprocessors.
Despite never having any aspirations beyond industry, and having a very satisfying career, every few years I felt a growing urge to pursue a PhD and an academic career. Finally, I began part time graduate studies in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (through what was at that time their Video Instruction Program in which Prime participated), eventually transitioning to being a full time PhD student in 1992, and receiving my PhD in 1996.
I've had the privilege to work with a talented and dedicated group of students and collaborators, and to be blessed with a wonderful family.
More details can be found in my CV, lists of publications and patents, and my research and teaching pages.
